High up in the Colorado plateau a replication of a mining town was created from collected structures and equipment form former mining towns along with a narrow gauge railway pictured here as the "Last Train to South Park". While hiking in RMNP, we were passed on the trail by some park rangers leading pack animals up the mountain. In 1769 Father Junipero Serra built the "Carmel Mission" as the new seat of the Franciscan diocese on the Monterey peninsula. The happiness of "Beach Dogs" just released from their leashes upon arriving at the shore. The opening ceremony of this gathering of tribes featured the participants in a welcoming chant and "Prayer of Hope". "Spirit Meditation", these Native American dancers were part of the annual Santa Ynez Chumash Pow Wow held at the Live Oaks Camp in the heart of the valley. Every summer Santa Barbara celebrates its' cultural heritage, here is a classic image of a "Vaquero at the Santa Barbara Mission". Santa Barbara's Fiesta Parade is one of the annual highlights featuring traditionally costumed participants such as this "Vaquero, Old Spanish Days". Hiking late in the day at Point Lobos with windy conditions I was joined by this friendly "Sparrow" who sang all the songs he knew hoping that I had some trail mix to share. There was a small koi pond in a forested garden; the sun illuminated the surface of the water as it was filtered through the tree canopy. The “8 Koi” seemed glad to have a visitor and anticipated being fed as they swam excitedly near the surface. - The dynamics, color and action in “Saturday Gladiators” made this both an exciting and challenging work to develop. This classic scene of American football featuring USC and Arizona is a study of conflict that focuses on the intensity of the players as the action evolves during the course of advancing the ball. - Santa Barbara is home to championship polo and the following two contemporary paintings show some of that action. “Polo Chase” captures the surge of players who are trying to position themselves to advance the ball towards the goal. There is an intensity of concentration by both the riders and the horses. - “Polo Pony” is more of a portrait than anything else. This was an interesting horse. He and his rider were off the field of play waiting to come into the game. The horse clearly was anxious to play and yet at the same time was distracted by my presence. His quick glance was only to determine if I were friend or foe before returning his concentration to the action on the field. - “Walk on the Beach” is a glimpse into ordinary ocean side activity, here a young seagull is walking along the shore foraging for something to eat. - “Red Silk Jacket” is a still life of sorts. I had just completed a series of works that featured the chroma of nature and was interested in trying the opposite with a subject that was brilliantly colorful. This study is a macro view of the upper portion of an Imperial Chinese tunic. - Models are difficult to find so I suppose that one’s pets become an alternative. “Vantage Point” is a study of my cat Blu. He’s of feral origins and has a nature that is more accustomed to the wild than domesticity.
